Why *fatties?

Just as the black and gay communities have embraced the words that have been used against them and made them their own, on behalf of my community, I embrace the word fat. All of my life the word fat has been spat at me. Of course, the word was not just describing my size but other preconceived notions about what fat people are. I fight now with people who "kindly" say "You aren't fat! You're big-chubby-chunky-husky-heavyset-thick-fluffy-well padded--plump-plus-sized-obese (oh thanks, that is much better)- bottom heavy-zaftig-curvy-etc." And while I may be all of those things, they are all descriptions of fat. And I am fat. What I am not is all the things that people think are synonyms for fat: ugly-disgusting-gross-slovenly- stupid-useless-desperate-untrustworthy-gluttonous-totally unworthy of love. I have not accepted the term as, "Okay, you win, I am gross, I give up." When I say fat, I mean, my body is padded with fat. Simple. No more an insult than "Your hair is a rich brown color."

I am taking the word back. It means what it means.

How did I get here?

It took me a long time to realize that my fat did not make me all of those things society tells us fat is. Once I started to believe that I am beautiful, wonderful, and worthy of love, NOW, just the way I am, it led me to really finding my style and strong suit. I create art to show the world how beautiful people are, just the way they are. I spent so long just waiting to be beautiful and looking back I always was and always have been. I don't want other people wasting their lives waiting to be beautiful. We are, now. Enjoy it while you are alive!

How did *fatties come about?

In my art, I embrace the symbols that for so long caused me shame. The Original *fattie was inspired by my dad who spent my teenage years teasing me about my supposed love of Twinkies. I like 'em, a lot. They are tasty... but he made a point of teasing me about them every chance he got. That lead to the birth of *fatties- strong, beautiful fat women who challenge the preconceptions of society, who look at the viewer and DARE them to admonish them for who they are or what they choose to eat.

May I use your art?

It depends. My terms of use can be found here. If you agree with my terms, then it is possible that you may be able to. Donating wouldn't hurt either!

Can I become a *fattie?

I would love nothing more than to paint you. What you need to think about is what kind of *fattie you are. For more information on being a *fattie, click here. Heck, even if you are not a *fattie, I would be more than willing to paint you. Like I said above, we are beautiful now, we might as well celebrate it!
